Car Batteries, Brands, Cost and Warranty

Cars - Routine Maintenance and Car Troubles Part 2

#2 Batteries

Closing Tips
  • You have within 14 days to have your battery checked in order to initiate your warranty; please note not on the fourteenth day; unless the service provider is generous; you will not receive a warranty.
  • Up to a year or two ago, after you received the warranty, you would periodically need to have the battery checked by the service provider who authorized the warranty; this system has been stopped. Now you only visit that service provider, that provided the warranty for the battery if your experiencing problems with it.
  • Please ensure that your battery is used according to guidelines to ensure that your warranty is honoured
  • Note, your warranty period, any time during that period your battery can be replaced or a monetary equivalent given....this is based on your service provider. For example if the warranty is under an 18-month warranty and it dies on the 17th month; you won't get a new battery; but you may get $50.00.

  1. Well said, but it is also critical do preventative maintenance on both your maintenance and "maintenance free" batteries namely, check your battery at the authorized dealer within the manufacturers recommendations (usually 3 months). Improper battery function my be a pre-indicator to other ills within the vehicle's systems alternators etc. From my experience battery life aligns with the warranties :o(.

Notwithstanding, once you do your "checkups" there are other pre-indicators that are harbingers to battery issues/failure namely, diminished capacity. Diminished battery capacity usually presents itself in two symptoms:

    1. diminished powers when starting i.e starting in less that one
    crank
    2. Dimming of the headlights

It should be noted that starting takes a "heavy load" on the battery and more so the air conditioning system takes an even heaver load on the battery. Therefore, DO NOT use the A/C if you see signs of diminished battery capacity
